"I was working on some equipment outside my house while my dog was lying nearby. Suddenly, a stranger came walking up the driveway. It turned out he had crashed a stolen car nearby and jumped the fence onto my property.

My dog immediately went on alert. I grabbed her and told her to stay while I called 911. When the police arrived with a K9 unit, they approached the situation with weapons drawn. My dog was clearly protective and very vocal, but she stayed right by my side and remained under control. Importantly, she never tried to go after the police dog — she simply barked and watched closely.

That’s exactly what I want from her. She doesn’t need to be aggressive — just aware and ready to alert me if something isn’t right. She’s normally very friendly and loves people, but she clearly sensed something different about this situation.

The police took the man into custody, and afterward I realized how grateful I was to have her there with me. She definitely earned a steak dinner that night!
